No One Could See the Color blue Until Modern Times: A summary of the article is the way that humans could see the world, and that the color blue wasn’t a color. Back in history in books they would describe the color of the water as being “wine-dark sea” or ‘wine-dark”. Guy Deutscher did an experiment with his daughter, he never told her what the of the sky was and her answer was that it was “colorless”. Another experiment took place that was Jules Davidoff he did his experiment with a tribe. Who had a language with no word blue in it or distinction between blue and green. They could pick out which one was different from the others.
Response: In this article it was a very good article to read because it was interesting to see and understand the break down of the color blue. Such as how back in history they would describe the color of the water as a wine type of color and never mentioned not once a color or any sort of blue. An how Jules did an experiment with a tribe that didn’t had a word for blue or anything. The experiment guy did with his daughter was really cool because he never told his told or described the color of the sky to her in an way. Her response to when she looked up at the sky and said it was colorless was really cool, because do we only see the color blue because people say that something is blue, when really it may not be blue but that’s just what we see because that’s all that we’ve ever been taught to see?
Discourse Community: In this article a summary of it would be that it gives insight of the full definition of what a “Discourse Community” is. It gives examples of discourse communities, such as in a college setting. It also goes into detail about discourse community and how botanists have their own discourse community. It gives insight on the many different discourse communities and about the significance in a discourse community.
Response: This was a good reading too for me personally because I had never heard of a discourse community or anything. I heard the word before, but I had never really fully thought about it. With reading this article it gave me insight that there is such thing as a Discourse Community and that it is a bunch of people who share the same common interest with each other. It also made me think about this app called Discord, because it now make since why someone would come up with an app that allows people who share common goals or interest to all be able to come together and talk about it with one another. It honest was a great read for me, it helped open my eyes to a different perspective of things. It also helped me understand the significance in a discourse community.
How Language Shapes Our Perception of Reality: They say that the ideas of grammar, metaphors that we use can result in a use looking at different things from different perceptions. Also, that those who we hang around have a huge impact on our perception of language. An example would be the language spoken in a Australia they don’t use the term right or left they use the terms north, south, east etc. English speakers get straight to the point whereas Chinese speakers give background information about the subject.
Response: This reading really did open my eyes to a new perspective in life. I never knew that the people that we hangout around can have an impact in the way that shapes our reality. It was really cool to read that the wording, grammar, and metaphors that we as people and also that we as a culture use shapes the way that we perceive things. That the people we are around shape the way that we talk which is interesting to me. But it is also understandable why if you spent so much time with someone that they way that they speak would rub off on you and you would start to talk like that person. Also, that the way language can impact our experiences such as relating back to the color blue article. They say in this article that no one really sees a color until there is a word for it which is mind blowing to me, because if you told someone that there was never a word for a color they would just see everything as being like a blank canvas or colorless.
The Concept of Discourse Community: John examines the first three terms to be examined about Discourse Community. He goes in detail to say that there may be a definitional problem: “The idea of “discourse community’ is not well defined as yet, but like many imperfectly defined terms it is suggestive, the center of a set of ideas. He talks about speech communities and discourse communities. He says that a speech community is defined tautologically but radically and as a community sharing knowledge if the rules of interpretation or speech.
Response: This article was good to read as well because he broke up the term discourse community into three parts. Also that the first part had to deal with the clarification of discourse community and how it in the present context it has been appropriated by the “social perspectivists” for their variously applied purpose in writing research. An how discourse community is a imperfectly defined term, but also how it can be the proponents of the “social view” for believing that discourse community is a powerful and useful concept an that it raises many questions. Also, how it is used in speech communities and how it helps form a tight definition of shared linguistic forms. This apportion of the article reminds me a lot about American Sign Language and how they are their own discourse community because they have their own type of language that they use an grammar. It also helped me to understand the difference between American Sign Language (ASL) and Pidgin Sign Language (PSE).

For my Journalist Text I wish for it not to be posted on the Activist. For me personally the process in trying to figure out which journalist text I would like to do is going to be challenging because I sometimes I don’t fully understand the fully understanding of things and it really just make sit a lot harder for me. ALign with trying to think of my own genre for the piece is going to be super difficult because I wouldn’t really know where to start or how to start.
I feel like there aren’t many strengths so far for this piece, but I do hope that as I move forward with this piece that there will begin to be more strengths than weaknesses. I hope for some strengths are going to be that I have a better understanding of the material and that I create a piece that is captivating to my audience/reader. I hope that there won’t be to many weakness in this piece but I know that everything isn’t perfect so I do have some expectations for there to be some weakness, and those would regard in having some unclearness in my sentences, or the type of sentences where you just begin to kind of space of and just start typing just to start typing .
I hope thi spiece will be a good piece for me, I don’t have the highest of expectations for the piece but I do have some expectations for this piece.
Over the past few weeks we have worked on several different types of genre in the class. Such as the profile that we work on the first few weeks of class we began to work on a profile. Something that we got the option to choose to do, we had to choose an organization and an individual that we had to interview or ask questions to get a more in depth idea about that person or about the organization, which to me was really interesting because you got to know more about something you were interested in. I did mine on Job Corp because I had heard about it and that it wasn’t really much of anything or that it was meant for the bad kids of the kids that dropped out of school or just the at risk behavioral kids.
Kaaisha, Erica, Dakota, Abby, Jamie, Janesa, Amber
1. Genre Name: Photo Caption; layed out numerically it’s a list, Opinionated.
2. Purpose: Inform and Educate people on the causes of anxiety, No.
3. Context: In classroom environment and so it’s more relaxed
4. Writer’s Role: Educated Student
5. Audience: Yes, UCBA, They are very open and not specific or have a specific set of rules, To be published to The Activist, To be able to identify what genre looks like.
6. Content: Different Type of Trauma that Affects Adolescents and Adults, Internet, Personal Experience, No, everyone’s personal experiences are different.
7. Sources: Not specific on what or how many sources we should have, Yes, Possibly.
8. Other Specifications: Don’t have to have a length and should be in MLA format. Font: Times New Roman
9. Assessment: It will be graded on how well we get the information out to the university and even beyond that. Along with have a better understanding of the materials.
10. Making The Text Your Own: No you cannot negotiate the topic because the topic is more of a personally experience piece.
A profile subject that I would like to explore more would be Job Corp because I hear people talk about it but I never really understood what it is for or how things were done there, the most interesting about it would be a better understanding of what Job Corp has in store for those that go there and what to really expect while being at Job Corp. Another profile article I think would be a really good one is one involving something dealing with why some culture groups act the way that they do and why do they attempt to appeal to everyone else, meaning by that is better understanding why people act a certain way around a certain group I’m curious to know why do they also shut out others that are not like or isolate those who do not agree with things that they like. The most interesting that to be about this would be is gaining the knowledge to have a better understanding of the different cultures in our society and the way that they act toward one another ever to other culture groups. I would also think that maybe doing an observational type of profile would be good as well because you get a better understand of what type of places appeal to what type of people and kind of get an understanding on what audience certain places are more directed for and why it would appeal to them. The most interesting things for that would have to be the type of audience that a place or things attracts to it. Another profile subject would be another observational type of profile because I work in a Health/Social Club and I was curious to have a better understanding of what type of group my job appeals to, the most interesting thing would be to see the difference between what type of culture of people come in and out of the club along with what social class they would be classified in.
What it means for the Activist is that it helps them appeal to the reads but as well as to inform the readers about things that would not have known about or even thought of, as well as different things to capture the audiences attention. What is important when each person is deciding on the profile is to think about things that would interest you as well as the different things that you or someone else always wondered about. It shapes the UCBA community to publish the profile because it helps everyone to stay connected as well as come together collectively to share their ideas and thoughts as a community.
The one I would like to do most would have to be Job Corp organization because it has grabbed my attention may times and it was always something I have just thought about and always wanted to know a more in depth and better understanding as well as how Job Corp operates as one community.
Part A) What interest me most about the color blue was that we all have grown up to say that the sky is blue and pick out the different colors, what makes it interesting is that is there really a color blue or do we just perceive ourselves to see the color. As they had described in the article that blue never showed up in Homer’s The Odyssey which was interesting because he described the sea as being a deep-wine color, but when we look at the sea we see a deep blue ocean or a light blue ocean. It’s interesting to get insight on how back than how people would describe things that we normally would claim to be blue. The article says about perception is that everyone does not see everything the same way and the way we see perceive things could be wrong and that our eyes deceive us when it comes to seeing certain colors. The language that has been used in the article is language is language that we as the audience can under and grasp the concept of, along with being clear about statements that the author uses. The author is trying to get us (the audience) to really think about what is being said in the article and getting us to really think about the article. When the article discusses the reality of the color blue it gives us information on the culture back than and how blue was not really a word and different people form different eras used different words to describe the color blue to their audience. It also gets us to think about if blue really is a color or not or if it is just a color that was made up. Just like when Guy Deutscher did a casual experiment on his daughter Alma Detscher while he raised her he never described the color of the sky to her and when she looked up she had the perception that the sky was colorless and made the decision that the sky was white and later on changed her answer to blue.
Part B) My experience with journalism today would be very broad because we read things everyday such on social media what new drama is going on between who and we stay up to date in the loop of what the trends are, the older generation watches the news (not saying younger generations don’t) because they do not really know how to work the way round social media unless help by the younger generation. Also, we rely on journalism to inform us about things that are going on in the world even dealing with things halfway across the world. The new models that are being explored in the article I thing that they are very creative and different because one ha smore focus on the schools and how they created a nonprofit organization to help cover the bases for a new community of supports for local news.
Part C) It’s not a new concept for me because if bene in a discourse before in high school I was a choir kid, so we all had the same interest in choir. It applies to UCBA because there are many different people from many different backgrounds and how there are some of us that all share the same interest such as our majors. What makes us a whole is that fact that all of us are there for many more than on purpose and we all may or may not have the same goals set for ourselves.
